Popular Dances
Lindy (or Lindy Hop)
The original style of Swing that evolved with the American Jazz music of the 20's and 30's, Lindy is an African American dance that combines elements of both partnered and solo dancing. Lindy styles vary widely depending on the tempo of the music and the preferences of the dancer. It's generally an energetic and lively dance known for its kicks, aerials, and focus on improvisation, self-expression, and musicality.
East Coast Swing
This is the easiest style of swing to learn and a great place to start your social dancing. East Coast Swing (also known as "6-Count") evolved from the 8-Count Lindy and became a dance on its own in the early 1940's. Swing can be danced to a wide variety of music and is easy and fun to learn.
Hustle (or Disco)
Extremely popular dance in the 70's and still hugely popular today, partnered Hustle (also known as the "New York Hustle") is a versatile dance with some resemblance to Salsa and Swing. It has a unique, syncopated rhythm and can be danced to retro music or popular club songs. The basic steps are easy and fun to learn.
Salsa
A Latin American dance, with strong influences from Cuba and Puerto Rico, Salsa emphasizes movement from the hips and rib cage. Fast, hot, and fun, Salsa is danced in nightclubs, bars, restaurants, and outdoor festivals around the world.
Cha Cha
Originally from Cuba, Cha Cha is a fast, rhythmic dance with a "shuffle" or syncopated "cha-cha-cha" step that mirrors the syncopated rhythm of the music. Cha Cha is a fun, flirtatious dance that can be danced to traditional Cuban music or Latin Pop or Rock music.
Rumba
Rumba uses the same hip actions as Salsa and Cha Cha but slows them down to a more sultry movement. Rumba is a good dance to know when you want to slow things down but still maintain a "Latin feel" to your dancing.
Argentine Tango
A social dance from Buenos Aires, Argentine Tango focuses on spontaneity, musicality, and a deep connection with your partner. These connections help create the very sensual and passionate look that Argentine Tango is most known for.
Foxtrot
Mostly danced to Jazz or Big Band music, Foxtrot is a "smooth" dance with a basic pattern of simple walks and side steps. It’s an easy, simple way to move across a dance floor with fluidity and grace. Foxtrot is a great dance to learn for slower social dancing.
Waltz
Similar to Foxtrot, but danced to a distinctive 1-2-3 timing and with an added rise and fall, waltz is an elegant and graceful dance known for its big "swoopy" movements around the dance floor.
And More…
There are many, many dances out there! Some of the less common but equally fun dances include Samba, West Coast Swing, Nightclub 2-Step, Merengue, Viennesse Waltz, Bachata, and more. If there is a particular type of dance you want to learn, let me know!
